Broadcast graphics software: what it is and how to choose

Broadcast graphics software is the layer that puts text and imagery over live video: names, scores, tickers, results, branding. This page explains what sits inside the category, how the pieces connect, and what actually matters when you are choosing between systems that differ in price by two orders of magnitude.

What the category covers

The term is used loosely, but a full broadcast graphics stack has three distinct jobs, and different products cover different combinations of them:

  • The character generator (CG) — draws the on-screen elements: lower thirds, bugs, tickers, full-frame cards. More on broadcast CGs →
  • Playout and control — the operator surface that decides what goes on air, when, and in what order.
  • Data — where names, scores and results come from: a scoring system, a newsroom, a spreadsheet, or a person typing.

Hardware CG, software CG, HTML5

The oldest broadcast CGs were dedicated boxes with SDI in and SDI out, keying graphics into the video path in hardware. They are reliable and expensive, and they need an engineer.

Software CGs moved the rendering onto a PC and sent the result out over a video card or the network. That is where CasparCG, vMix titles and most modern studio systems live.

What actually matters when choosing

  • How fast can an operator change a name? Not “can it do X” — how many clicks, live, under pressure.
  • What happens when the data source dies? If the answer is “the graphics stop”, walk away. Manual entry must always be available.
  • Does it survive a restart mid-show? State should come back the way you left it.
  • Who can edit a template? If it takes the vendor, expect to wait weeks for a colour change.
  • What does it cost per output? Per-seat, per-channel and per-year pricing scale very differently for a one-person stream and a ten-camera studio.
  • Does it lock the picture in? A system that composites for you decides your whole video chain; one that hands you an alpha layer leaves the chain to you.

What is the difference between broadcast graphics software and a character generator?

The character generator is the part that draws and plays out the on-screen graphics. “Broadcast graphics software” is the wider category, which may also include data integration, design tools and playout control around that CG.

Do I need broadcast graphics software to stream?

No, but the difference is immediately visible. Even one well-timed name strap and a consistent corner bug move a stream from home video to something a viewer reads as a programme.

Can broadcast graphics run on a normal PC?

Yes. Anything that renders HTML5 overlays runs comfortably on the same machine as OBS. Dedicated hardware only becomes necessary when you need SDI key/fill or guaranteed frame-accurate playout.
