Stream overlay maker: live graphics, not static images

Most stream overlay packs are picture files you drop into OBS and never touch again. A live overlay is different: it knows the score, the guest’s name and today’s headline, and it changes them while you are on air. Here is what goes into one and how to build it.

What a stream overlay actually contains

Strip a professional broadcast down and you find four or five recurring elements. A stream overlay is the same list, scaled to one person and one PC:

  • A name strap — who is talking, and why they are worth listening to. Lower third maker →

  • A ticker — a crawl along the bottom for headlines, schedules or sponsors. News ticker software →

  • Frames and mattes — the static furniture around a webcam or gameplay, which is the only part a picture file does well.

Static overlays versus live overlays

A picture overlay is fine for frames and borders — the shapes never change, so a PNG is the right tool. Everything with text in it is a different problem. The moment a name, a score or a headline is baked into a PNG, updating it means an image editor and a reload, which is not something you do calmly at minute forty of a live show.

A live overlay keeps the design in a template and the content in a panel. The design does not change during the show; the content changes constantly. Separating them is the whole trick.

Designing one that suits a stream

Broadcast graphics are designed for a television two metres away. A stream is watched on a phone in one hand. That changes three decisions: type is bigger relative to the frame, contrast is stronger, and there is less on screen at once.

Pick one accent colour and use it everywhere — the strap, the bug and the ticker should look like they came from the same place, because a mismatched overlay is the fastest way to look amateur. Keeping the corners clear

Platforms put their own furniture on your picture. Twitch adds chat and player controls, YouTube adds a title bar and end cards, Kick has its own chrome, and every one of them can cover a bottom corner on mobile.

Keep at least 5% clear on all four sides, and treat the bottom-right corner as borrowed space rather than yours. A ticker across the very bottom edge is the most common casualty of this — pull it up slightly and it survives every platform.

What is the difference between a stream overlay and a lower third?

The lower third is one element of the overlay — the name strap in the bottom third. The overlay is everything drawn over your video: straps, bugs, tickers, frames and full-frame cards.

Do I need Photoshop to make a stream overlay?

Not for the live parts. Straps, bugs and tickers are built from templates and driven from a panel. An image editor is only useful for static furniture such as a webcam frame.

Can I use the same overlay on Twitch, YouTube and Kick?

Yes — the overlay is composited into your video by OBS before it reaches any platform, so all three receive the same picture. Just keep the edges clear so each platform’s own interface does not cover something important.
