What CasparCG does well

CasparCG plays video, audio and HTML templates out of a rundown, with frame accuracy, over SDI through a Decklink card or over NDI. It handles key and fill, multiple channels and layers, and it is controlled by AMCP commands over TCP from whatever client you like.

For a station that needs a real playout server and has an engineer who knows it, there is no reason to look elsewhere. It is free, it is proven, and it does not go away when a vendor loses interest.

Where small teams get stuck

  • There is no operator interface in the box. The server is the product; the panel your operator uses is something you or a third party builds.
  • Templates are a project. HTML templates are powerful, but somebody has to write them, wire up the update calls and test the in/out animations.
  • The video path assumes broadcast. Getting the output into OBS usually means a Decklink card, NDI, or a screen-capture workaround.
  • Nothing knows about your show. Match clocks, squads, score logic and rundowns are all things you supply — the server plays whatever it is told.
