Chyron software: what people mean when they say “chyron”
In an American newsroom, “put a chyron on him” means put his name on screen. The word is a brand name that became a generic term, and if you have arrived here searching for chyron software or a chyron maker, what you are almost certainly looking for is a live lower third.
How a brand became a word
Chyron Corporation built the character generators that put titles on American television from the 1970s onward. The machines were so dominant in newsrooms that crews stopped saying “character generator” and started saying “the Chyron”, then simply “chyron” for the graphic itself — the same journey that turned Xerox into a verb.
Chyron is a trademark of its owner and LowerThird Software is not affiliated with, endorsed by or compatible with Chyron products. We use the word here only in its everyday generic sense, because that is what people type into a search box.
What a chyron is on screen
A chyron, in the generic sense, is the text strip in the lower third of the picture: a name and a title, a location, a headline, a “BREAKING” band. Everything on this site called a lower third is the same thing under a different name. Lower third maker →
Newsroom usage extends it a little further: the crawl along the bottom, the corner bug, the full-frame results page — all of it is “graphics”, all of it comes from the same operator position.
What you actually need to make one
- A template — the design, built once: plate, type, animation, safe-area position.
- A data entry surface — somewhere to type the name and role before the shot happens.
- A play-out trigger — one key to bring it on, one to take it off.
- A transparent output — a layer your encoder can composite over the picture.
Making a chyron for a stream
The broadcast systems that the word refers to are built for newsroom automation and hardware playout chains, at prices that assume a station budget. For a stream you need the same result, not the same infrastructure.
LowerThird Software gives you the template, the panel and the transparent HTML5 output; OBS, vMix or Streamlabs does the compositing. Type the name, press TAKE, and the strap is on air. The generic term is “broadcast character generator” →
